Tracing Roads Across

a project by
Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards

The creative development of the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards, from April 2003 to April 2006, was housed within the project Tracing Roads Across, supported by the Culture 2000 Programme of the European Union. Tracing Roads Across was made possible by a network of cultural operators from five different countries. Standing out among them was Fondazione Pontedera Teatro which headed the group of co-organizers by hosting the "Main Work". Gülsen Gürses, Artistic Director of Theater des Augenblicks in Vienna, was Project Manager of Tracing Roads Across.
Tracing Roads Across, as well as directly concerning the Workcenter's practical research, periodically focused the artistic team's attention towards selected young theatre groups, performance artists and students, and also gave the Workcenter team the opportunity to address topics related to creative analysis with theatre experts and scholars. The project created the circumstances in which the works and creative processes of young artists and scholars were analyzed from the point of view of performance craft.
A three-year travelling cultural dialogue was fostered between chosen theatre groups, organizations and cultural operators from eleven nations. The participating individual artists, theatre groups and intellectuals delved at different levels and in different stages into the practical aspects of the overall three-year project.

Tracing Roads Across, which was realized by the Workcenter team under the leadership of Thomas Richards, created the opportunity for non-professionals and theatre-lovers of all participating countries to come in contact with the artistic research and performative opuses of the Workcenter. Interested individuals have also been contacted through the numerous open conferences, projections of documentary films, and public discussions held in the participating countries.

Tracing Roads Across was supported by the "Culture 2000" Programme of the European Union.

Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards

The Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski was founded in 1986 at the invitation of the Centro per la Sperimentazione e la Ricerca Teatrale of Pontedera, Italy (now: Fondazione Pontedera Teatro), its director Roberto Bacci and Carla Pollastrelli.
In 1996 Jerzy Grotowski decided that the name of the Workcenter change into: Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards, because, as he specified, the direction of the practical work already concentrated itself in the hands of Thomas Richards.
Between these two dates, Jerzy Grotowski realized with Thomas Richards the process of transmission in the ancient, traditional sense of the word.
After the death of Mr. Grotowski in 1999, the direction of the Workcenter, and its artistic drive toward the future has been in the hands of Mr. Richards, who is deepening and developing the research and the Workcenter's creative exploration.

The team of the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards is presently made up of its Artistic Director, Thomas Richards, its Associate Director, Mario Biagini, and an artistic group - Workcenter researchers who have taken active part in the performative researches from one to eight years.

About the research

The daily research at the Workcenter takes place in an intense schedule; six days a week, normally eight to ten hours a day.

From April 2003 to April 2006, both the internal and external activities of the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards articulated themselves through Tracing Roads Across: a three-year project supported by the Culture 2000 Program of the European Union, and by a network of cultural operators from five different countries.

Throughout Tracing Roads Across the Workcenter developed its practical research along the following two lines:

Art as vehicle:
At work on an alternative potentiality of performing arts

This research has always articulated itself in the creation of precise performative opuses that are repeatable down to the minutest detail. These opuses in the domain of art as vehicle have come to be known as "Actions". Many different Actions have been created throughout the years. For example: Downstairs Action (filmed by Mercedes Gregory in 1989), and Action - an opus in the domain of art as vehicle presently done at the Workcenter (filmed in 2000, production Atelier Cinéma de Normandie - A.C.C.A.A.N. and Centre Dramatique National de Normandie, and in 2003, production Atelier Cinéma de Normandie A.C.C.A.A.N.). As well, Thomas Richards is presently creating a new opus in the domain of art as vehicle with the Workcenter team.

Action
From 1994, Thomas Richards directs Action, an opus that he created and on which he carries on a continuous work. Action structures, in a material linked to performing arts, the work on oneself of the doers. The opus is composed of lines of actions elaborated in detail, constructed with and around ancient vibratory songs. Most of these songs are African and Afro-Caribbean in origin, and therefore are in the languages practiced by those cultures. In Action, there also appear, often under the form of incantations, fragments of a text in English translated word by word from Coptic. This text comes from a very remote source of the Judeo-Christian tradition; one cannot say anything with certitude about its arising.
In theatrical performances strictly speaking, that is, in art as presentation, normally one of the indispensable elements is the story, the narration. A story is told, even if the essential may be something else. For the observer of Action, however, it would be more pertinent not to look for a story - the analogy would be rather poetry than narrative prose.
The fact is that in Action we do not look to tell a story. It is not an opus in the domain of art as presentation, but in the domain of art as vehicle. Since we can see the performing arts as a chain with numerous links, where at one extremity one finds art as presentation (theatre in the strict sense), and at the other extremity, art as vehicle.
It is something very ancient, rather forgotten. In art as vehicle there are opuses, but they do not necessarily demand the presence of exterior observers, since this work does not orient itself towards the spectator as an objective. Because of that, witnesses may be present or not.
For the persons doing, the doers, the opus is a kind of vehicle for the work on oneself, in the sense that, as in certain old traditions, the attention for art goes together with the approach of the interiority of the human being.
If we speak in terms of qualities of energy, in Action the work on the ancient vibratory songs becomes a sort of itinerary starting from the vital, the biological even, to go towards the subtle: the ascent towards the subtle and the descent of this subtle towards the level of more ordinary reality.
From the point of view of technical elements everything in this research is almost as in a normal theatre work of long duration. We essentially work on the songs, but we also work on the impulses, the score of reactions, the logic of the minutest actions, archaic models of movement, the word, so ancient that it is almost always anonymous. Everything depends on the artisanal competence with which we are able to work, on the quality of the details, the quality of the actions and rhythm, on the order of elements. So, we look to be impeccable from the point of view of craft. In Action as much as in a performance of art theatre, the structure is repeatable; it has a beginning, a development and an end, where each element should have its technically necessary logical place.

Fairly often exterior observers are invited to see Action. In the beginning, this involved a small number of people, but now after all these years there have been in total thousands of witnesses - but always in little groups. And when someone witnesses, even though the work of art does not exist for them, they have the opportunity to perceive the underlying aspects that give life to the creative opus.

The New Opus in Art as vehicle
In the field of art as vehicle, Thomas Richards is developing a new opus with the Workcenter team. This creative process, which is based on an anonymous ancient text of the Western tradition and also on ancient vibratory songs, is being developed in the form of a Work-in-creation. For the first time in the history of the Workcenter, a working process in the domain of art as vehicle is being elaborated not uniquely in isolation and far from exterior observers, but, periodically, in close proximity with small groups of witnesses. In the initial phases, Mr. Richards organized portions of the appearing creative material in modular segments and worked on it within the many activities of the first two years of Tracing Roads Across. These creative units of structured explorations in action, which appeared under the name of The Twin: an Action in creation, were repeatable and rigorous, and always had a clear beginning, development and end. As the third year of Tracing Roads Across commenced, Richards entered into an advanced phase in the construction of the new opus. He began to let witnesses be present as he worked on new emerging elements, which are presently called An Action in creation: work session.

The text, which is an integral part of the new opus along with ancient vibratory songs, has a narrative nature. The gist of the story - a story of a journey, of a task forgotten and then remembered and fulfilled - can be found in several versions throughout the whole Eastern Mediterranean area. The dramaturgical approach is not one of narration: as in certain old traditions, the story is rather re-enacted than re-presented.

Project The Bridge: Developing Theatre Arts
From One breath left (1999 - 2002)
to Dies Iræ: The Preposterous Theatrum Interioris Show (2005 - 2006)

In May 1998, the Workcenter began to develop a new thrust in its research that eventually evolved into a full branch that was maturing next to the research on "art as vehicle" - Project The Bridge: Developing Theatre Arts. Therein, a bridge was sculpted in the material of performing arts, a bridge that stretched from the world of theatre to the investigations on "art as vehicle". What appeared in Project The Bridge was neither theatre in the strict sense, nor "art as vehicle". The first piece created inside Project The Bridge was One breath left, directed by Mario Biagini and Thomas Richards. One breath left eventually became the basis for an exploration that led to the transitional piece One breath left - Dies Iræ, which in turn transformed into Dies Iræ. Finally, a new piece emerged - Dies Iræ: The Preposterous Theatrum Interioris Show, also directed by Mario Biagini and Thomas Richards.

In Project The Bridge, we search for efficacious ways of dialogue in two seemingly opposite directions. Unlike the opuses in the domain of "art as vehicle", the pieces in Project The Bridge are consciously created with both an arrow of intention that stretches toward those present, watching, and another essential vector of intention related to those doing, to their intention in doing. Herein, we move towards these two vectors of intention, which exist in, and are supported by, alive and precise structures of action.  With Project The Bridge we are hunting for a new link: the performative event that might act as a bridge penetrating directly into the essential work. It is this further perspective of field which we pursue in our research with Project The Bridge.

One Breath Left
One breath left was publicly presented on many occasions from 1998 until December 2002, in Italy and abroad. There existed different versions - six to be exact - and each of them was stemming from the previous one, moving forward towards our intuited objective. We presented One breath left every time that a certain level had been reached, when the professional impeccability was solid and, at the same time, when the work itself started to indicate what the next step might be - the unexplored creative possibilities. We should not think of such long-term, concentrated development, however, as "work in progress", in the sense that this expression often takes on, or as some sort of étude. Each step of confrontation with exterior observers was artistically fully accomplished. But again, for us, "accomplished", meant that within it, we had already begun to see the new, unknown road to tread.

Dies Iræ
What appeared for us in Project The Bridge around the beginning of 2003 was a door towards another possibility, a further possibility. A certain stage had been reached, but something unknown was starting to tempt us, and we went with this temptation. We entered into a transitional period in which we dove deeper towards our intended objective. Our necessities were pushing us towards a new step in dramaturgic elaboration and a deepening of lines of actions relating to this new emerging dramaturgy. Dies Iræ began to appear, as our response to these necessities.

Dies Iræ - shown in anteprima in Istanbul in the summer of 2003 - had its world première in Fondazione Pontedera Teatro in February of 2004, and it was performed, among other places, in: November 2003, Vienna, Austria; May 2004, Florence, Italy - Fabbrica Europa Festival; May-June 2004, Varna, Bulgaria; June-July 2004, Caen, France; September 2004, Nicosia, Cyprus; and November-December 2004, Vienna, Austria.

In December 2004, during the Workcenter residency at Theater des Augenblicks in Vienna, Austria, and after in January 2005 in Pontedera, Italy, the piece was further developed and another version appeared: Dies Iræ: The Preposterous Theatrum Interioris Show.

Dies Iræ: The Preposterous Theatrum Interioris Show
A group of actors gathers for their spectacle. At the beginning, only a man, his head bowed into the darkness. His eyelids open onto the stage of his inner world - and see! Out of the black void seemingly concrete figures come to life, answering his bidding to action: a groping research into the nature of existence, probably. The strolling players of this absurd comedy play hide and seek in the cracks of wake and dream, in the vaudeville of desires and fears. Well, their adventure may also be a cruel inquiry into the dubious essence of theatre art. And surely, these phantasms would make up a theatre company with a very peculiar conception of art.

"Life's splendor forever lies in wait about each one of us in all its fullness, but veiled from view, deep down, invisible, far off. It is there, though, not hostile, not reluctant, not deaf. If you invite it by the right word, by its right name, it will come. This is the essence of theatre, which does not create, but invites."

The actors of the whimsical drama perform their liturgy, pitilessly. Where does the soul hide, if anywhere? Only a random lottery to find it. Can the one chosen by the raffle - a woman -  incarnate his innermost life, made of the evanescent substance of the soul? Can she really transform herself into the vessel of a redeeming presence, while hanging between knowledge and ignorance, yes and no? Will she perish in this grotesque and desperate attempt, or finally fly?

Dies Iræ: The Preposterous Theatrum Interioris Show, a production of Fondazione Pontedera Teatro, Italy and Theater des Augenblicks, Austria, was shown in anteprima in December 2004 at Theater des Augenblicks - Vienna, Austria, and had its première in April 2005 in Pontedera, Italy - Fabbrica Europa Festival. It was also performed in: May 2005, Wroclaw, Poland; July 2005, Cappadocia, Turkey; September 2005, Zaros, Crete; November 2005, Moscow, Russia; December 2005, Vienna, Austria; March 2006, Hammamet, Tunisia; and April 2006, Pontedera, Italy.

Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards

Arte come veicolo

An Action in creation: work session.

Progetto The Bridge: Developing Theatre Arts
Da One Breath Left
(1999 - 2002)
a Dies Iræ: The Preposterous Theatrum Interioris Show (2005 - 2006)

One Breath Left

The Preposterous Theatrum Interioris Show.

Dies Iræ: The Preposterous Theatrum Interioris Show

È stato poi presentato a Wroclaw in Polonia (maggio 2005), in Cappadocia, Turchia (luglio 2005), a Zaros a Creta (settembre 2005), a Mosca (novembre 2005), a Hammamet in Tunisia (marzo 2006) e ancora a Pontedera (aprile 2006).
