With the support of  The Centre for Study of Jerzy Grotowski's Work and for Cultural and Theatrical Research thanks to the financial contribution of the City of Wroclaw (Poland), and the support of Fondazione Pontedera Teatro (Italy)

During the month of February 2005 the Workcenter held a selection session in which a hundred candidates from European and non-European countries participated. Five candidates were selected and invited to join a new program of the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards called New Stagiaires Program.

The New Stagiaires Program took place inside the calendar of the Workcenter's  three year project Tracing Roads Across, with the duration of one year, from April 2005 to April 2006.

The New Stagiaires Program of the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards involved work on different elements of the actor's craft: 

The participants explored different possibilities of creating performative structures with songs coming from ancient traditions.
 
This work on songs of tradition demands the learning of many songs that are used within the practical research at the Workcenter. The participants learned to sing them under the guidance of a leader, learning to follow the leader in synchronization with the changes of tempo-rhythm, respecting the tuning and looking for a flow of organic impulses of action and reaction.

The participants were requested to develop repeatable structures of physical actions, learning how to structure actions with living details and clear intentions.

The participants carried out a day-to-day structured physical training that included individual exercises looking to confront their individual weaknesses and physical blocks. They were requested to work on their exercises in a non-mechanical way and in contact with the other participants.

Theory in rehearsals: Thomas Richards utilized the practical working sphere as a spring-board for theoretical teaching. Since certain examples are witnessed in practice related to acting craft, Mr. Richards gave an explication of the given theoretical point, thus uniting theory within the practical working sphere.

In Tracing Roads Across, Thomas Richards, the Workcenter's artistic director and Mario Biagini, its associate director have on many occasions held conferences, public meetings, theoretical seminars and projections of documentary films on the practical researches of the Workcenter, to which theatre experts and intellectuals from different nations were invited to participate. Inside Tracing Roads Across there also existed a team of scholars and theatre experts, the Documentation Team, whose function was to follow regularly the work of the Workcenter. Besides accomplishing a function of documenting the Tracing Roads Across activities, the members of the Documentation Team were in constant dialogue with the artistic team of the Workcenter, thus giving the opportunity to the latter to discuss subjects which are linked to creative analysis with intellectuals and theatre experts. The New Stagiaires Program group also entered into close contact with the team of scholars that was following the practical researches of the Workcenter. They had the opportunity to take part in these conferences, public meetings, and documentary film projections that took place almost every month throughout the year.

The new stagiaires had the opportunity to assist as observers to the exchanges-in-work that the Workcenter team held regularly with professional theatre groups from the different countries involved in Tracing Roads Across. The exchanges-in-work program included the presentation and demonstrations of the performative opuses of each group participating in the exchange to the other participating groups, and a meeting between the groups, in which the works that were presented were analyzed from a professional point of view.

The stagiaires involved in the New Stagiaires Program, which took place inside the project Tracing Roads Across under the guidance of Thomas Richards, were in a very close contact with the artistic team of the Workcenter for the entire year.

Nel febbraio 2005 si è tenuta una Sessione di Selezione al Workcenter a cui hanno partecipato un centinaio di candidati provenienti da diversi paesi europei e non europei. Sono stati così selezionati cinque candidati che sono entrati a far parte del nuovo programma del Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards denominato New Stagiaires Program.

Il New Stagiaires Program del Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards è stato collocato all'interno del calendario del progetto triennale Tracing Roads Across, per la durata di un anno, dall'inizio di aprile 2005 alla fine di aprile 2006. 

Il New Stagiaires Program del Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards ha compreso il lavoro su diversi elementi del mestiere d'attore:

I partecipanti hanno esplorato le diverse possibilità di creare strutture performative con canti provenienti da tradizioni antiche.

Il lavoro con i canti di tradizione richiede l'apprendimento di numerosi canti, utilizzati nelle ricerche pratiche del Workcenter. I partecipanti hanno imparato i canti oralmente con la guida di un leader, imparando a seguire il leader nella sincronizzazione dei cambiamenti di tempo-ritmo, rispettando l'intonazione e cercando un flusso di impulsi organici di azione e reazione.

È stato richiesto ai partecipanti di sviluppare strutture ripetibili di azioni fisiche, imparando a strutturare le azioni con dettagli viventi e intenzioni chiare.

I partecipanti hanno svolto un allenamento fisico quotidiano strutturato che comprende anche esercizi individuali, concepiti al fine di confrontare le debolezze ed i blocchi fisici individuali dell'attore. Ai partecipanti è stato richiesto di lavorare con i propri esercizi in un modo non meccanico, e in contatto con gli altri partecipanti.

Teoria nelle prove: Thomas Richards ha utilizzato la sfera del lavoro pratico come trampolino per l'insegnamento teorico. Quando la pratica ha offerto l'occasione di osservare determinati elementi del mestiere dell'attore, Richards ha fornito una spiegazione teorica del dato elemento, integrando così teoria e sfera del lavoro pratico.

In Tracing Roads Across, Thomas Richards, direttore artistico del Workcenter e Mario Biagini, direttore associato, hanno tenuto diverse volte conferenze, incontri con il pubblico, seminari teorici e proiezioni di film documentari sulle ricerche pratiche del Workcenter a cui sono stati invitati a partecipare esperti di teatro e intellettuali di diverse nazionalità. All'interno di Tracing Roads Across è esistita inoltre una squadra di studiosi ed esperti di teatro, il Documentation Team, con la funzione di seguire regolarmente il lavoro della squadra del Workcenter. Oltre a svolgere una funzione di documentazione delle attività di Tracing Roads Across i membri del Documentation Team sono stati in dialogo costante con la squadra artistica del Workcenter, dando l'opportunità alla squadra del Workcenter di discutere soggetti legati all'analisi creativa insieme ad esperti di teatro e intellettuali.

I nuovi stagiaires hanno avuto l'opportunità di assistere in qualità di osservatori agli scambi di lavoro che la squadra artistica ha tenuto regolarmente con gruppi teatrali professionisti provenienti dai diversi paesi coinvolti in Tracing Roads Across. Il programma degli scambi di lavoro includeva la presentazione e dimostrazione delle opere performative di ciascun gruppo partecipante allo scambio e un incontro a porte chiuse tra i gruppi, in cui i lavori presentati venivano analizzati da un punto di vista professionale.
 

Gli stagiaires coinvolti nel New Stagiaires Program che si è svolto nell'ambito del progetto Tracing Roads Across sotto la guida di Thomas Richards sono stati a stretto contatto con la squadra artistica del Workcenter.
