Setting out from the premise that intercultural dialogue is a basic instrument for the understanding and evaluation of differences in creativity, the 2008 Edition of the FABBRICA EUROPA Festival will continue to encourage the circulation of ideas and works in the context of international exchange. The dimension of the laboratory and meeting among people and ideas from distant geographic and linguistic places, in conflict or in any case different one from the other, has always been one of FABBRICA EUROPA's fundamental principles. The 2008 Edition, the fifteenth, will emphasise, modulate and make this dimension programmatic, by calling artists and operators to share yet more processes of creation, production and transmission of the various branches of knowledge. On the multicultural front, highlighting this dimension is the continuation of a road begun years ago, supporting on behalf of art and entertainment those processes of new citizenship that the new Europe stimulates in full dignity, in respect of the original approaches of each party and each community whether respresenting a majority or a minority. In 2008, the focus will be on relations with African culture. This culture has been alive in Europe for a number of generations and has transformed languages and relationships, but in present-day Africa it gives rise to great changes while keeping intact its own diverse, indomitable characteristics. FABBRICA EUROPA therefore wishes to investigate relationships with cultures from outside Europe (from the Mediterranean to Subsaharian Africa), ever more influential in Europe's cultural and social humus, bringing life to fertile new areas of co-habitation and creativity. Europe is more and more a destination for immigration; also in the field of art, we cannot fail to ask to what degree European identity is being changed by contact with artists whose background is so different, and how important this interweaving of cultures may be in the creation of an effectively open European culture and a new European citizenship. The instrument we have chosen is the "gathering of ideas" offering artistic direction the function of choice and support of artists and groups presenting proposals in a position to contribute to the operative reality of Fabbrica, an international reality that is at the same time linked to the Stazione Leopolda. The dimension of FABBRICA EUROPA '08 is to be that of a laboratory, i.e. a space and time to compare research, roots, materials and techniques made available by artists and groups, with their stories, identities and affiliations as the starting-point. FABBRICA EUROPA will therefore host a series of projects in which the laboratory will be the centre point, or at least an important, organic part.
Continuing with research started in the previous editions, a further feature of this XV Edition will be an investigation into new technologies in today's ever-widening relation with the performing arts, through a travelling dialogue which will touch many European cities besides Florence in seeking new alphabets to share, new creative methodologies with the final aim of creating an interdisciplinary network of European artists, producers and researchers who are dealing with the integration of cutting-edge digital technologies and performing arts.

FABBRICA EUROPA 2008 - XV edizione

Partendo dal presupposto che il dialogo interculturale è uno strumento fondamentale per comprendere e valorizzare le differenze anche in ambito creativo, l'edizione 2008 del Festival FABBRICA EUROPA proseguirà nel suo intento di favorire la circolazione di idee e opere in un contesto di interscambio internazionale. La dimensione del laboratorio, dell'incontro di persone e di idee provenienti da territori geografici e linguistici lontani, in conflitto o comunque diversi, è da sempre uno dei fondamenti di FABBRICA EUROPA. L'edizione 2008, la XV, si propone di enfatizzare, modulare e rendere programmatica questa dimensione, chiamando artisti e operatori a condividere ancor più i processi di creazione, di produzione, di trasmissione dei saperi. Nella prospettiva multiculturale, enfatizzare questa dimensione significa continuare in un percorso già iniziato da anni, sostenendo dal lato dell'arte e dello spettacolo i processi di nuova cittadinanza che la nuova Europa vuole innescare in pienezza di dignità, nel rispetto dei percorsi originali di ciascun soggetto e di ciascuna comunità, maggioritaria o marginale che sia. Per il 2008 l'attenzione sarà focalizzata sulle relazioni con le culture extraeuropee (da quelle del Mediterraneo a quelle dell'Africa subsahariana) che sempre più stanno impregnando l'humus sociale e culturale dell'Europa e stanno dando vita a nuovi e fertili territori di convivenza e creatività. L'Europa è sempre più meta d'immigrazione e anche in campo artistico non possiamo non interrogarci su quanto l'identità europea si stia modificando a contatto con artisti che portano con sé background profondamente diversi e su quanto questo intrecciarsi di culture sia importante per creare una cultura europea realmente aperta. Lo strumento scelto è quello del "concorso di idee", che dà alla direzione artistica una funzione di scelta e di sostegno rispetto ad artisti e collettivi che presentano proposte capaci di calarsi nella realtà operativa della Fabbrica, internazionale ma al contempo legata allo spazio della Stazione Leopolda.
Un altro aspetto che caratterizzerà questo XV festival, proseguendo una ricerca già avviata nelle precedenti edizioni, sarà l'indagine sulle nuove tecnologie nella loro sempre più attuale relazione con le performing arts, attraverso un dialogo itinerante che, oltre Firenze, toccherà diverse città europee alla ricerca di nuovi alfabeti da condividere, e nuove e metodologie creative, con l'obiettivo finale di creare un network europeo di artisti, ricercatori e organizzazioni che si occupano dell'interazione tra nuove tecnologie e performing arts.
